Maratus is a spider genus of the family Salticidae (jumping spiders). These spiders are commonly referred to as peacock spiders due to the males' colorful and usually iridescent patterns on the upper surface of the abdomen often enhanced with lateral flaps or bristles, which they display during courtship. Females lack these bright colors, being cryptic in appearance.
Spiders are really amazing creatures. They are incredibly strong. In fact, they can hold 170 times their body weight while hanging from a ceiling. Their silk is also quite strong—stronger than steel. Unfortunately some people often mistake spiders for insects. They’re not. Spiders have two body parts—the thorax and abdomen—and eight legs.
This is very similar to the whole Florida Cougar thing we did in class. My guess about what makes them a separate species is that they have enough differences to be considered different than the other peacock spiders, but still have the traits of a peacock spider to be considered in the same group much in the same way we have different species of dolphins that are all dolphins. The spider's courtship behaviour is comparable with the European Saitis barbipes. The name of the peacock spider was changed a few times. From Attus volans to Saitis volans and recently to Maratus volans. Like many other Australian common spiders the genus name was given by European arachnologists more than a century ago.Coastal peacock spider Maratus speciosus, sometimes called the coastal peacock spider, is an Australian species of jumping spider (family Salticidae). They are only known to inhabit the vegetation of the coastal sand dunes of southwestern Western Australia.
The peacock spider, Maratus volans, has one of the most elaborate courtship displays in arthropods. Using regular and high-speed video segments captured in the lab, we provide detailed descriptions of complete male courtship dances. As research on jumping spiders has demonstrated that males of some species produce vibrations concurrently with visual displays, we also used laser vibrometry to.Read More
