Ikhtilaf and Unity in Muslim Ummah: A Comparative Analysis Khalida Majid Shah-i-Hamadan Institute of Islamic Studies, University of Kashmir,Jammu and Kashmir ABSTRACT: Disagreement (Ikhtilaf) on religious issues has been a common phenomenon in Muslim Ummah as a result of their different judgments and perceptions on various matters.
The first and foremost internal challenge that Muslims need to overcome urgently is their disunited ummah. As we know, the mission of the prophet Muhammad was to bring peace and unity to the feuding tribes of the pre-Islamic days. However, after the prophet passed away, the Arabs returned to their feuding wars. Blindly tribal loyalties returned.
The unity of Muslims the world over is the need of the hour. Only unity can bring them the glory that the world of Islam once enjoyed. Theirs will then be a third world bloc (of Muslim countries) that may be as powerful as the capitalistic bloc or individual world powers like Communist China.Alas! There is no Iqbal today among Muslims who can guide the Muslim Ummah against the forces of evil that are bent on its destruction. But the Muslim Ummah can also be torn apart due to internal conflicts. In fact, this is what is happening to Muslim Ummah today. Probably, there are no people in the world today who are as divided as Muslims.No doubt unity and consensus has a miraculous role in developing a nation and achieving their higher goals. Muslim's unity is a major and undeniable problem of the time. The increasing sectarian ethnocentrism has spattered and blemished the fundamental Islamic teachings.
